The JRR Tolkien calendar for 2008 celebrates the release of The Children of Hurin, a story which Tolkien worked on and revised for many years, but which was never published in its entirety until 2007. Each page of the 2008 calendar features one of Alan Lee's illustrations created for the book. The calendar's larger size makes it possible to more easily see the small details and backgrounds of Lee's paintings. In keeping with the mood of this rather dark story, Lee's illustrations tend to be somber graytones. The exceptions feature vivid splashes of flame, pale tints of green, and light blue skies. In addition, each month's grid includes nice charcoal or graphite sketches which border and sometimes spread into them. The center page has short descriptions of each illustration and a few paragraphs by Lee discussing the perils and privileges of illustrating Tolkien's world. If you are unfamiliar with Tolkien beyond the familiar Hobbit and Lord of the Rings stories then this calendar will help to introduce you to his posthumously published and darker works. Tolkien readers already accustomed to those later writings will find this calendar true to the author's vision of Beleriand.
